With “Wohngeld-Plus”, significantly more people will be entitled to housing benefit. In addition, the amount of the housing allowance will increase by an average of around 190 euros per month, which is more than doubling. Current housing benefit payments that have already been approved until 2023 will continue to be paid after the turn of the year. No new application for housing benefit is required. A new request should be submitted only after the expiration of the specified approval period. The statutory right to the new “Wohngeld Plus” will not be taken away and will automatically be taken into account from January 2023.
Calculation, preparation of notices and payment of the housing benefit are performed by the state company IT.NRW. The competent state minister warns that the calculation technique cannot be transferred to the new law at the beginning of the year. After changing the program, an automated recalculation and surcharge is made in the case of permanent housing allowances. The State Ministry currently predicts that the change in the accounting system will be completed by April 1, 2023. Therefore, in April 2023, in addition to regular housing benefits, additional benefits should be paid.
The full Wohgneld plus starts to be paid from April 1, 2023. Then the difference (arrears) for the first three months of 2023 will also be paid.
