Housing benefit?

If your income is too low and you are unable to pay the rent or installment of the loan for the property, you can request help in the form of housing benefit.

Who is entitled to housing benefit?

Any German citizen who has enough income to cover his own living expenses (the so-called minimum income) can apply for housing benefit – but does not generate enough income to cover his housing costs. Tenants and owners can equally have the right to housing benefit.

What is paid in the housing allowance, when and to whom?

Only part of the rent is paid. The payment is usually on the 1st of the month and is paid to the account of the person who submitted the request or to the account of a household member. You can also request that it be paid directly to the landlord’s account.

How much is housing allowance?

The only way to get the benefit amount is by completing the housing benefit calculator. The size of the living space is not important, the deciding factor is the maximum amount provided for your family and the amount of rent.

Who is not entitled to housing benefit?

Housing benefit is only paid to people who do not receive other benefits (such as unemployment benefit II, social assistance, basic old-age insurance and reduced earning capacity), because housing costs are already taken into account when paying these benefits. In the case of an income equal to the minimum income, you will not be entitled to housing benefit, but will be asked to transfer to Hartz IV.
