Shortage of medicines in Germany

The biggest problem is the shortage of children's fever syrup and children's antibiotics

What is the cause?

The general shortage of medicines is a problem that has existed for years. The reason is production costs and profitability, where many manufacturers have stopped production, and the remaining manufacturers cannot compensate for the need in the market.

Another problem is that respiratory infections are eight times higher than usual in the months of the wave of illness. Children’s clinics are full of sick children, and some schools had to change their timetables, because the teaching staff was also sick.

Why are respiratory infections so much higher than in previous years?

We got the answer at the children’s clinic, where the doctors claim that the answer lies in the drop in immunity due to wearing masks. The most common problems in children are high temperature, sore throat, and ear pain. A large number of families with three or more children have the problem that respiratory infections simply return. As soon as one child gets well, another gets sick.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)

It is the main cause of acute respiratory diseases at all ages and one of the most important causes of respiratory infections in children. Typical symptoms of respiratory disease are cough, sore throat, runny nose, and fever. The disease usually lasts for about 3 – 12 days, and the cough for over a month.

Ibuprofen, amoxicillin and pencillin

Currently, the biggest problem is the shortage of children’s fever-reducing syrup, Ibuprofen, and the children’s antibiotics amoxicillin and penicillin. These are drugs used for most viral or bacterial infections in children. In the case of viral infections, doctors prescribe paracetamol tablets as a substitute, which fortunately is still sufficient at the moment.
