First job through employment agencies

What is temporary work - Zeitarbeit?

Temporary work?

All of you who come to Germany and do not have a secured job, you will probably apply for a job through employment agencies. The name in Germany is Zeitfirma or Leihfirma.

How does temporary work work?

Temporary work is a relationship between the employer (lender), the worker (temporary workers) and the company where the employee works (firm). The employee concludes a work contract with a temporary employment agency.

Anyone who works as a temporary worker does not necessarily have to get a “temporary contract” (work contract for a fixed period of time). Temporary workers are usually given an employment contract for an indefinite period of time.

The agency for temporary work then entrusts the work of a temporary worker to companies that have immediate staffing needs. A temporary worker does not work for his employer, but for the company that hires him. This is why we talk about temporary work or temporary employment.

How to apply?

Sign up via email, call or visit the branch. It’s easier by email or call, because you don’t have to physically visit all agencies for temporary work. After you’ve interviewed at one of the agencies that invite you, you’ll sign an employment contract and you’re ready for a new job. You usually start working after a couple of days, or even same day.

What documents to bring?

  • Identity card or passport
  • Registration of residence (Meldebescheinigung)
  • Current account card
  • Social security number
  • Tax class
  • Biography
  • Temporary residence permit (if you are not from the EU)

Why work through agencies?

The thing is simple, you came to Germany and no one will hire you directly in the company (maybe someone is lucky, but it is rare). The advantage of working through agencies is that you can start working mostly without knowing the German language. There is usually so much work that you start working after just a few days.

Collective contract

Work through agencies is regulated by collective agreements iGZ / DGB and BAP / DGB, it consists of all that is stated in the text.

What are the stations, overtime and vacation?

The starting hourly rate is usually 13 euros, up to 14.00 euros gross. It is higher than the minimum legal hourly wage, which is 12 euros from October 2022. Overtime hours are paid without bonus, you get 2 days of vacation per month of work. You will not receive a Christmas bonus or various bonuses like in normal companies.

After how long does the company you work take you over?

According to the contract, the company should take you on after 9 months, but they often don’t take you on, so you start working for a new company through an agency.

What jobs can you expect?

These are most often jobs that require unskilled labor. Work on sorting, packing, quality control and similar jobs that do not require school. We are talking about when you are already in Germany and when you are looking for any job to start with.

In short

If you need a job quickly, you will find it in temporary work agencies. It’s not ideal, but it will do, because you don’t have a better choice right now. If you show yourself as a worker in the company where the agency forwards you, you will soon get a job, which is better paid when you are an employee of that company. Likewise, if you don’t like the work that the agency offers you, ask them to transfer you to another company or change the agency.
