Everything about work in Germany

Contracts, hourly rates, labor rights and more

Job

There are as many jobs in Germany as you want. Current unemployment in December 2022. is 6.1%, which means that only those who do not want will not find a job.

If you are not a highly qualified staff, the chance of a good job is zero, and if you come looking for a job, the chance is even smaller. When you add to that the lack of knowledge of the language, then you start from the bottom, i.e. if you work in a factory, your occupation is mainly production assistant (produktionshelper). The good thing is that such an income is relatively good for a normal life. That’s how simple things are in the beginning.

Contract of employment

The employment contract consists of basic information about you and your employer, but the most important thing for you to check is:

  • whether the work is temporary (Befristeten) or indefinite (Unbefristeten)
  • how long is the trial period (Probezeit)
  • what is your hourly rate (Stundenlohn)
  • are you entitled to bonuses and Christmas allowance (Weihnachtsgeld)
  • leave allowance (Urlaubsentgelt)
  • how overtime and holidays are paid
  • how many hours do you work in a week (Arbeitszeit pro woche)
  • job description (Tätigkeitsbeschreibung)
  • what is the notice period (Kündigungsfrist)

Job through agencies (temporary work or Zeitfirma)

If you work through an agency (Zeitfirma), they only respect the labor rights that are prescribed by law from the iGZ-DGB collective agreement. Basically, it’s a starting hourly wage of €12.50 (the minimum hourly wage in Germany is €12), 24 days of annual leave, unpaid overtime bonuses. So you can work for 9 months with the same employer and then the company where you work should take you over, but it often happens that you are transferred to a new company.

How do you get a good job?

Difficult, like a lottery. The first problem is how fluent you are in German. Even in deficit professions like IT, you will have a hard time getting a job, because there is a lot of supply and demand. Another problem is our school system, which is different from the German one. For example, schoolchildren do an internship on a certain machine in a company, and when they finish their education, the company immediately hires them. Because the masters are already trained to work on a certain machine.

The part where you can possibly get a job depends on connections and acquaintances, that’s why you make as many contacts as possible. A job through a relationship is not like in the Balkans, you get a job by being a member of the party that is in power, and you are incompetent and incompetent to the point of pain. If you meet the criteria for the required job like the other candidates, and you came by recommendation, the job will be yours. So spread your acquaintances.

Working hours

Factories mostly work from 06:00 to 14:00, from 14:00 to 22:00 and the night shift from 22:00 to 06:00. Five days a week. The break is unpaid and generally lasts half an hour. If you work as a delivery person, you work 9 hours a day, 5 days a week. There is so much work that you can even work on weekends if you want. When you come to Germany, these jobs are the most common for you to start with.

What is a good hourly wage in Germany?

Below €18 per hour is considered a bad hourly rate. The average gross salary is around €4,000. Most people who arrive in Germany work for 12 to 13 euros per hour. Hourly rates and wages are calculated in the gross amount.

How do tax brackets/grades affect salary?

You have 6 tax brackets, depending on whether you are single, single parent, married couple or have multiple jobs? The worst tax class is 6.
