Bürgergeld or what is the citizen money?

Bürgergeld, a new measure of financial assistance?

From January 1, 2023, personal income is in full use

From January 1, 2023, Germany starts paying out money to citizens (Bürgergeld). The former measure was Hartz IV (Jobcenter) or Unemployment Benefit II, and now the new measure is called Bürgergled. Citizens’ income serves as support for those who are unemployed or in need (social assistance).

What are the differences between the new measure in 2023 and Unemployment Benefit II or Hartz IV?

With the changes in the social law, the income of citizens reflects the socio-political transformation. Citizens’ income recipients should be given the opportunity to concentrate more on training, higher education and job hunting.

Who is entitled to benefits?

• Accessibility to the local employment center

What new amounts are paid out?

Looking at the difference for one person between the old Hartz IV and the new Burgergeld, the increase is €53 over the Hartz IV and now stands at €502.

These are the following amounts that are paid out:

  • 502 euros – single person
  • 451 euros – married or common-law partners in a common-law union
  • 420 euros – children from 14 to 17 years old

How about assets

Don’t worry that was thought of too. Waiting period in the first year of benefit receipt, assets worth up to 40,000 euros are saved and do not contribute towards the citizen’s income entitlement.

Penalty

In the past, Hartz IV grantees faced penalties for providing false or misleading information. There was a lot of opposition to this from citizens and associations. The introduction of a citizen’s income will not completely eliminate penalties.

At the beginning of 2023, Hartz IV or Unemployment Benefit II and social benefits were abolished

What does the year 2024 bring?

According to the federal government’s study on subsistence levels, the standard rate will rise in 2024. Federal government predicted rise for standard requirements from 6% to 8%. Using a rise of 8%.
Please note that these are only predictions. Knowing the German government and how much it cares about the social status of citizens, we do not believe that the amounts will be lower than 8%.
